Google and the migration from HTTP to HTTPS sites

Hi, I’m Holly and today I’ll be talking about the upcoming change to the way Google Chrome views HTTP sites. At some point in January they’ll start flagging HTTP sites’ pages as insecure.

This change will be rolled out in stages. But what could this mean for you? If you have a HTTP site, users will soon receive warnings to say that the data they’re accessing is insecure. This will happen on pages that have passwords or information fields that need to be filled in, but later updates will say that entire sites need to be flagged.

The “S” from HTTPS stands for secure, and, as suggested, migrating your site from HTTP to HTTPS makes your site and the data within it secure. It’s a great positive trust signal, and as evidence has shown site speed can improve, altogether adding value to your site.

Google is most likely introducing these changes to encourage more sites to use encryption and to also protect users. This is a move that will benefit us all, so make sure you migrate your site from HTTP to HTTPS to avoid warnings and repercussions but to also improve your site overall.
